Mother Goose told us that a little lamb followed Mary to school one day. Bert Fernald had a goat follow him (see our current poster) and Byron Strout was followed to school by his dog, Brownie, who was invited to come inside to wait. We are up for lots more stories about school days at our next Person to Person gathering.

On Sunday, May 6, from 4:00-5:30PM, we have invited people who attended Poland’s one-room schools to share recollections in a program we’re calling, “Conversations with Scholars”. It is a follow-up to our very successful February program with Rose Aikman. The program will be preceded by an Open House at the Poland Historical Society Building, formerly the District 22 (Poland Corner) School. The building will be open from 2-4PM on the same Sunday afternoon. Everyone is invited to drop by to see the building and its exhibits.

Please note that there will be no potluck supper and that our usual meeting time has been changed as well. Light refreshments will be served.

We hope you can join us.

Hello Friends,

We need your help. Friends of Ricker Memorial Library is a small group of local volunteers who have been working hard to continue all of the successful and exciting programs that Ricker Memorial Library has to offer. However, with so many fun things going on at the library, we are in desperate need of more volunteers. That is where I am hoping that you will come in.

Currently, Friends of Ricker Memorial Library offer a variety of programs to the local community. Have you checked out our free movie night yet? Perhaps you have joined us for one of our potluck suppers or have come in to enjoy a brown bag lunch special. Maybe you joined our summer reading program with your children or are looking forward to our upcoming e-book program. All of these fun, educational, and interesting programs have been offered through our volunteer groups.

We are looking for volunteers to join us in our efforts. We need more “friends” to help us continue to offer our current programs and to help us come up with some fun new ideas for the library as well. We are also looking for help with ideas for new fundraising events.

If you are interested in joining us as a new Friend of Ricker Memorial Library please contact us today!

We would LOVE to have you on board!

We have invited Hibo Omar, co-chair on the New Mainers Community Collaborative (NMCC) and executive director of the New Mainers Public Health Initiative, an ethnic based nonprofit organization that believes in resolving health issues of New Mainers through education, information and empowerment, to speak with us in February. Our speaker has a BA degree in natural and applied science from USM, Lewiston/Auburn College. Among her several jobs, she has recently signed on as a Home Visitor for Advocates for Children and so we believe that she will come to us with experience and perspective of someone who is thoroughly familiar with the Somali community of Lewiston/Auburn. Hopefully, she will address questions we have about things we read and/or observe.
