2013 Daylily Sale

Always AfternoonFriends of Ricker Library, in cooperation with Terri and Steve Young, will hold a Daylily Sale on Saturday and Sunday, July 13 and 14, 2013, from 9AM – 5pm. The sale will be held at the Young home, 158 Jackson Road in Poland. Terri Young has been raising daylilies since 1994. Today, she has more than 125 varieties, in all colors and sizes. There are white, pink, yellow, red, ruffled and spider lilies, as well as tall lilies and short ones. Terri got interested in these flowers because she thought they were beautiful. She has come to appreciate the low maintenance feature of the sturdy plants, too. Although many of the plants have much higher market value, they will all be offered for $5.00 each. (Buy five and get one free.) Buyers will have special plants for their gardens and help the library, too. This is a true example of gilding the lily. The beautiful lily is made more beautiful when it can help to raise money for Ricker Library. FMI call the library at 998-4390.

Support Our Libraries

Last year the Maine Legislature approved adding a "Maine Public Library Fund" check-off to the 2012 state income tax forms. All money deposited in the fund and the earnings on that money will be used to provide grants to free public libraries. The Maine Public Library Fund check-off is on line 8 of the Schedule CP Voluntary Contributions Form. This is a great way to help our libraries.

Poland Board of Selectpersons Honors the Friends of Ricker Library

We are honored to have been recognized at last week's Board of Selectpersons meeting for our organization's contributions to the library and community. The Board has named this week, October 21 through 27, Friends of Libraries week in Poland to coincide with National Friends of Libraries Week and "urges everyone to join the Friends of the Library and thank them for all they do to make our library and community so much better." Click here to read the full proclamation. We want to thank the Poland Board of Selectpersons for their support and recognition of the important part that the Friends play in the community. Their proclamation is a tremendous honor. Membership in the Friends is based on a donation of time or money. If you have given to the Friends recently, we thank you for your contribution and will be sending you a membership card shortly. If you have donated your time to the library, we need to hear from you in order to recognize your membership. Simply contact us with your name and mailing address and a brief explanation of your contribution so that we can add you to our member roster and send you a membership card. If you have not yet given but desire to do so, you may donate online by visiting, visit the library to pick up a paper membership form, or contact us to inquire about volunteer opportunities. Friends members will be present at the library Monday and Tuesday evening, Thursday afternoon, and all day Friday and Saturday to speak with patrons. We invite you to stop by and say hello!

New Season for Person to Person

Storyteller to Be Kick-off Speaker

John Ford, author and former Maine game warden, will be the featured speaker at the September Person to Person. Ford has recently released his book, Suddenly the Cider Didn’t Taste so Good, Adventures of a Game Warden in Maine, and he will share some of his experiences with our audience. These stories involve dealing with some wild people (lawbreakers), as well as with some wild animals. This should be an entertaining evening with a fun loving storyteller.

Person to Person Potluck/Program Sunday, Sept. 9 5:30-7:30 Ricker Library Community Room Please bring a casserole, salad, or dessert to share.

We are excited about our new Person to Person season and we say welcome back to all of our “regulars”. We encourage you to “talk us up” and to invite other friends to join us. We’ll announce all of the programs for another great series at our September meeting.

Yard Sale Rescheduled

Our annual Yard Sale has been rescheduled for September 15. Call the library at 998-4390 to register.

Yard Sale Canceled

Due to low registrations and this weekend's forecast we have decided to cancel the yard sale. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Yard Sale 2012

Our annual Yard Sale will be held this year in August! Join us on August 11, 2012 (rain date: August 12) for this fun event! Call the library at 998-4390 to reserve your space. More details are coming soon.

Person to Person – An Added Program

Mother Goose told us that a little lamb followed Mary to school one day. Bert Fernald had a goat follow him (see our current poster) and Byron Strout was followed to school by his dog, Brownie, who was invited to come inside to wait. We are up for lots more stories about school days at our next Person to Person gathering. On Sunday, May 6, from 4:00-5:30PM, we have invited people who attended Poland’s one-room schools to share recollections in a program we’re calling, “Conversations with Scholars”. It is a follow-up to our very successful February program with Rose Aikman. The program will be preceded by an Open House at the Poland Historical Society Building, formerly the District 22 (Poland Corner) School. The building will be open from 2-4PM on the same Sunday afternoon. Everyone is invited to drop by to see the building and its exhibits. Please note that there will be no potluck supper and that our usual meeting time has been changed as well. Light refreshments will be served. We hope you can join us.
